Broadcasting

A number of broadcasting companies and programs commissioned reports from Dichter, including American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Strike it Rich, and Radio Luxembourg. Documents within this theme cover a variety of different programs, such as political broadcasts (President Franklin D. Roosevelt's radio history), soap operas (Trueness to life in the daytime serials (a psychological analysis)), children’s programs and game shows. In addition to reports covering the United States and Europe, there are also some reports investigating television viewing in the Middle East (Motivational research study on the image of METV and TV viewing in Israel and South Lebanon).

Some reports seek to understand the audience’s response to a radio or television broadcast using the Gray-Leary index (a formula for assessing readabilty often used in education). Other reports aim to analyse the audience’s response to channels themselves, (Study on the comparative patterns of viewer response to TV channels in New York and Los Angeles). As a result of the emergence of new mediums of advertising, some clients also requested reports on the effectiveness of one media versus another (An outline of an experimental investigation measuring the psychological impact of print advertisements as compared to television commercials).
